According to Fichajes, new Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has informed the club’s hierarchy that Ferland Mendy does not feature in his plans for the upcoming season.
Xabi Alonso Informs Real Madrid That 29-Year-Old Ferland Mendy Is Not in His Plans

As a result, the Madrid board has begun exploring options to facilitate the French defender’s departure from the Santiago Bernabéu this summer.
Although Mendy signed a contract extension last year, Alonso reportedly feels the 29-year-old does not align with his tactical vision and is eager to introduce a new option at left-back.
Mendy’s stock has declined in recent seasons due to recurring injuries, inconsistent performances, and a general loss of confidence. Despite being under contract until 2027, parting ways with the French international is expected to be both financially and logistically challenging.
Nonetheless, Real Madrid remain determined to streamline their defensive options on the left flank and bring in a player who better suits Alonso’s system.
Álvaro Carreras Tipped as Mendy’s Successor
Among the several candidates considered internally, one name stands out—Álvaro Carreras. The young Spanish full-back, currently playing for Benfica, is reportedly Alonso’s preferred choice to fill the role.
A former product of Real Madrid’s youth academy, Carreras has impressed in Portugal and is now seen as a promising long-term solution for the position.
Reports indicate that Carreras is close to rejoining Los Blancos on a six-year deal, running until 2031. Alonso is believed to have approved the transfer, though negotiations remain ongoing over the fee.
Benfica are demanding €50 million, a figure Madrid currently view as excessive. However, talks between the two clubs continue in hopes of reaching a compromise.
With Alonso intent on reshaping the squad according to his philosophy—and Carreras fitting the mould—Mendy’s time in the Spanish capital appears to be nearing its end. The coming weeks will be pivotal in determining the future of Real Madrid’s left-back position for next season.
