Chelsea have climbed to fourth in the Premier League after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Leicester City, deepening the Midlands club’s struggles at the foot of the table.

On a day when Tottenham Hotspur staged a comeback to secure a 2-2 home draw against Bournemouth, Marc Cucurella struck the decisive goal in the 60th minute at Stamford Bridge after Cole Palmer had his first-half penalty saved.

The win strengthens Chelsea’s bid for a return to the Champions League next season, as they leapfrog four-time reigning champions Manchester City, who suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest the previous day.

Enzo Maresca’s side capitalised on City’s slip-up, with Cucurella drilling a powerful long-range effort into the bottom corner past Mads Hermansen to seal the victory.

Earlier, Hermansen had been Leicester’s saviour, diving low to deny Palmer’s penalty in the 22nd minute. It was the first time Palmer had failed to score from the spot in the league, ending his perfect record of 12 consecutive penalties, which had been a Premier League record.

The 2016 champions Leicester City now find themselves six points adrift of safety in the relegation zone.

Son’s Late Penalty Secures Spurs Comeback Against Bournemouth

At Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Son Heung-min’s late penalty completed a dramatic comeback for Ange Postecoglou’s side after Champions League-chasing Bournemouth had dominated for much of the match.

Marcus Tavernier gave the visitors the lead in the 42nd minute, before Evanilson doubled their advantage in the 65th. Justin Kluivert also struck the post as Bournemouth threatened to extend their lead.

However, Pape Matar Sarr gave Spurs hope just two minutes later when his mis-hit cross caught out Bournemouth goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and sailed into the net.

It was Arrizabalaga’s mistake that ultimately cost Bournemouth all three points, as he brought down Son in the box, allowing the South Korean to step up and convert from the spot to secure a crucial point for Spurs.
