The former midfielder rejoined Arsenal as Technical Director in 2019 before being promoted to Sporting Director in 2022. He has been regarded as a pivotal figure in Arsenal’s resurgence as a Premier League contender under manager Mikel Arteta in recent seasons.

Edu stated that he is leaving to take on “a different challenge,” though he did not specify what that would involve.

“This was an incredibly difficult decision to make,” Edu expressed in a club statement. “Arsenal has offered me the opportunity to work with so many remarkable individuals and to be part of something truly significant in the club’s history. Now, it is time for a new challenge. Arsenal will always remain close to my heart. I extend my warmest wishes to the club and its supporters for continued success.”

Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke acknowledged Edu’s decision and commended his “tremendous contribution and dedication in driving the club forward.”

Kroenke added, “Change and evolution are intrinsic to our club’s journey. We remain committed to our strategic goals and the pursuit of major trophies. Our succession plan will mirror this ongoing ambition.”

Edu made 127 appearances for the Gunners and was part of Arsène Wenger’s “Invincibles,” who completed the entire 2003–04 season unbeaten.
