Government Minister Goran Vesic announced that he would resign following the tragic deaths of 14 people at the Novi Sad train station last Friday. His decision comes in the wake of significant protests demanding that the government assume responsibility for the incident.
Serbia: Minister to Resign Following Train Station Roof Collapse
Serbia's Minister of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure, Goran Vesic, announced on Monday that he would resign following the tragic incident in which 14 people lost their lives due to the collapse of a train station roof in Novi Sad. During a live broadcast, Vesic stated, "Tomorrow morning I will officially submit my resignation as minister of construction, transportation, and infrastructure." He emphasized that he was stepping down as "a responsible man who wants to show by personal example that in today's Serbia there is a moral responsibility since such a terrible accident happened under the department that I lead."
Despite his resignation, Vesic asserted that he did not "accept the guilt for the deaths of 14 people" resulting from the accident that occurred last Friday. The disaster involved the collapse of part of the concrete roof canopy above the entrance of the Novi Sad railway station, although the exact cause of the collapse remains unclear.
This incident followed the completion of a lengthy renovation of the station in July, which authorities clarified did not encompass the collapsed roof, and construction work was still in progress in certain sections of the building. The tragic event has ignited public outrage in Serbia, with many individuals taking to the streets and utilizing social media to criticize Vesic and other government officials for what they perceive as inadequate oversight regarding construction and development projects.
On Sunday, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in front of the construction ministry in Belgrade, where they threw red paint at the building while calling for the minister's resignation. In response to the incident, prosecutors in Novi Sad reported that Vesic, along with dozens of others, was questioned over the weekend as part of the investigation into the fatal accident.
