Nigeria: Explosion Hits School Near Abuja, Killing At Least Two
A bomb exploded at a school near Nigeria's capital city, Abuja, late on Monday, claiming the lives of at least two individuals.
According to the police, the explosive device detonated at the Tsangagyar Sani Uthman Islamiyya School, located near Abuja. Authorities have identified three suspects from Katsina, a northern state in Nigeria, as those involved in the incident.
The improvised explosive device (IED) was brought to the school by the three men, who were reportedly visiting the owner of the school at the time. Police have confirmed that two of the men died in the explosion while tampering with the IED on the school’s veranda. The third man, along with a female trader, sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment under police supervision, according to police spokesperson Josephine Adeh.
After inspecting the remains of the explosive, law enforcement officials confirmed that it was indeed an IED. The school’s owner has been taken into custody for questioning regarding the incident.
It remains unclear whether any students were present at the school during the explosion.
In recent years, Abuja has witnessed a rise in attacks carried out by armed groups from surrounding states like Katsina, which have been severely impacted by violence. Last year, bombers in Borno state targeted a wedding, the funeral for the victims, and even the hospital treating the wounded.
