Nigerian Troops and Boko Haram Terrorists Killed in Violent Clashes in Borno
The Nigerian military reported that its troops killed 34 terrorists during a gun battle in northeastern Borno state, while six soldiers lost their lives. The fighting occurred in Sabon Gari village when militants ambushed troops returning to a military base, according to military spokesman Major-General Edward Buba.
The attackers were identified as members of the Boko Haram and ISWAP groups, and they mounted the attack on motorcycles and trucks equipped with guns on Saturday. The troops, supported by reinforcements from the Civilian Joint Taskforce volunteers and local vigilante groups, successfully repelled the ambush.
The insurgency, which has been ongoing for 16 years, is mainly driven by Boko Haram and its offshoot, ISWAP. It has caused significant human and economic losses, including mass displacement and a humanitarian crisis. During the clashes, six soldiers were killed, and the vigilante commander was injured by an improvised explosive device (IED). Additionally, airstrikes by the Nigerian Air Force targeted the fleeing insurgents, causing further casualties in addition to the 34 killed in the gun battle.
