At least 30 people have been reported dead after a powerful earthquake in China's Tibet Autonomous Region. Tremors were also felt in Nepal and as far away as India.

Dozens of people were killed, and many others injured after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Himalayas on Tuesday morning.

Local Chinese media reported at least 36 fatalities in and around Shigatse, a city in Tibet. Tremors were felt in neighboring Nepal and India. According to Xinhua state news agency, the quake affected Changsuo, Quluo, and Cuoguo townships in Dingri County.

The earthquake occurred at 9:05 a.m. local time, with an epicenter depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). The initial magnitude was reported as 6.9 but later revised to 6.8. However, the US Geological Survey recorded it as 7.1.

By 10 a.m., several aftershocks were recorded, the strongest measuring 4.4 in magnitude. Dingri County and surrounding areas experienced strong tremors, resulting in the collapse of numerous buildings near the epicenter, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Video footage shared by Reuters showed damaged buildings and crumbled shopfronts in Shigatse and Lhatse, with debris strewn across roads. Shigatse, a holy city and the seat of the Panchen Lama, one of the most significant figures in Tibetan Buddhism, bore extensive damage.

The tremors were felt as far as Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) away. Residents fled their homes in panic. Anoj Raj Ghimire, chief district officer of Solukhumbu in Nepal, stated that no injuries or property damage had been reported, but security forces and locals were mobilized to assess the situation.

In India's northern state of Bihar, officials confirmed that tremors were felt, but no damage or casualties were reported.

Earthquakes are common in the Himalayan region, but Tuesday's quake was the most powerful within a 200-kilometer radius in the past five years, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

The region has a history of devastating earthquakes. In 2015, a 7.8-magnitude quake in Nepal claimed approximately 9,000 lives.
