South African Minister Under Fire Relocated in Cabinet Reshuffle
South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa announced late Tuesday that he was making changes to his Cabinet, which had been formed just six months ago.
“To ensure the effectiveness of the Cabinet in fulfilling its mandate, I have decided to make the following changes to the national executive,” Ramaphosa said in a statement.
Thembi Nkadimeng was removed from her position as the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development and was appointed as the Minister of Human Settlements.
Nkadimeng had faced criticism after being accused of receiving a loan of 575,000 rand ($31,741) from a company that allegedly took bribes from VBS Mutual Bank while she was mayor of Polokwane in Limpopo province.
She has denied the allegations.
The VBS bank collapsed in 2018 following years of corruption, leaving many retirees without their life savings. Nkadimeng has denied any wrongdoing in relation to the scandal.
Mmamoloko Tryphosa Kubayi, who was the former Minister of Human Settlements, has now been appointed as the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development.
Phumzile Mgcina, the former Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour, has been appointed as the new Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.
Judith Nemadzinga-Tshabalala has been appointed as the Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour. She previously served as the Deputy Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.
Ramaphosa confirmed that these changes take effect immediately.
