ADF Rebels Kill 10, Kidnap Others in Eastern DRC Attack
At least 10 individuals have been killed, and an unknown number of others have been kidnapped by extremist rebels affiliated with the Islamic State group in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a military spokesperson reported on Monday.
The attack occurred on Sunday night in the Batangi-Mbau area of North Kivu province, where rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an IS-linked group, launched the assault. During the attack, several houses were set ablaze, according to the spokesperson, Mak Hazukay.
"We urge the population to remain vigilant and assure them that we are committed to expelling the enemy from our territory," Hazukay said.
Eastern DRC has been plagued by ongoing violence for decades, with over 120 armed groups vying for control over power, land, and the region's valuable mineral resources, while others strive to protect their communities. Some of these groups have been implicated in massacres.
The violence has led to the displacement of nearly 7 million people across the region.
In recent years, attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces have grown more frequent and have spread to Goma, the main city in eastern DRC, and neighboring Ituri province. Human rights organizations and the United Nations have accused the ADF of killing hundreds and kidnapping many, including children.
Earlier this month, the ADF was responsible for the deaths of at least 13 people in another village in North Kivu.
