At approximately 6:46 a.m., Brian Thompson, 50, was shot in the chest and leg while standing outside the Hilton hotel on Sixth Avenue.

The CEO of UnitedHealthcare, one of the largest insurance providers in the U.S., was tragically shot and killed Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan, according to multiple news outlets citing police sources.

Brian Thompson, 50, was fatally shot just before 7 a.m. on 54th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, as reported by the New York Post, Bloomberg, and WPIX. WPIX reported that video footage from the scene showed police tape surrounding the area as authorities arrived.

UnitedHealth did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

A spokesperson for the New York Police Department, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told USA TODAY that a 50-year-old man was shot in front of the Hilton hotel around 6:46 a.m. When officers arrived, the man was found unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from gunshot wounds to his chest and leg.

Emergency medical responders quickly transported the victim to Mount Sinai West, where he was later pronounced dead. The NYPD spokesperson did not release the man's name, stating that they are awaiting notification of his family before doing so.

No one has been arrested in connection with the shooting, according to the NYPD.
