An E. coli outbreak linked to organic carrots has resulted in one death and dozens of infections across the United States. Grimmway Farms, a California-based company, has recalled its organic carrots, including whole and baby carrots, after 39 cases of E. coli infections were reported in 18 states. The outbreak has led to 15 hospitalizations.

The recalled carrots, sold under various labels such as 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Nature’s Promise, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, and O Organics, were available for purchase from August 14 to October 23, 2024. The products may have been contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli), a bacterium that can cause serious infections, particularly in vulnerable groups like young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Health officials warn that E. coli infections can lead to severe symptoms, including bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, and vomiting, and may result in complications like kidney failure and high blood pressure. The CDC is advising consumers to dispose of any affected products found in their homes and seek medical attention if symptoms occur.
