The majority of Manchester United supporters favour building a new stadium rather than redeveloping Old Trafford, according to a recent survey.

Among more than 50,000 Red Devils season ticket holders, club members, and executive club members surveyed, 52 per cent expressed a preference for a new stadium, while 31 per cent supported the redevelopment of the existing ground. Seventeen per cent remained undecided on the best option.

The club’s ownership, in conjunction with the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force, is exploring both options. The Task Force includes former United defender Gary Neville, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, and World Athletics President Lord Coe among its members.

Although no definitive timeline has been established for making a final decision, sources close to the project, as initially reported by The Daily Telegraph, suggest it is now likely that a decision will come in spring or summer of next year after the Task Force's findings have been fully reviewed. Previously, there were indications that the decision might be made by the end of this year.

On Tuesday, United confirmed that an “options report” would still be provided by the Task Force before the year’s end. It is understood that discussions within the Task Force have primarily focused on constructing a new 100,000-seat stadium rather than expanding the existing one.

Sources familiar with the Task Force's work told PA in the summer that this project is about more than merely building a stadium; proceeding with the new-build option would represent one of Europe’s most ambitious regeneration undertakings.

The survey also revealed that newer season ticket holders were more inclined to favour a new stadium, with support for the new-build option also increasing with age.

Rick McGagh, Manchester United's Director of Fan Engagement, commented: “We are delighted that this survey received the highest response in the club’s history. It highlights how significant this work is, and this level of engagement is a fantastic foundation to build upon.

“We understand how much our home ground means to our supporters, and we need to listen to them to gather their perspectives in developing a world-class stadium that they deserve.

“We can analyse these results from multiple perspectives, allowing us to understand whether our season ticket holders’ views differ from those of our official members, or if younger fans have different preferences from older ones. This insight is invaluable, enabling the project team to understand both the shared and diverse viewpoints within our fanbase.”

In September, the club announced that it had appointed Foster + Partners “to develop a masterplan for the Old Trafford Stadium District, covering the club-owned land surrounding the current stadium”.

Manchester United is hosting 'Town Hall' sessions at Old Trafford on Tuesday and Wednesday to provide fans with further information on the various options and plans under consideration.
