All eyes will be on Ruben Amorim on Tuesday evening as Sporting Clube de Portugal face Manchester United's rivals, Manchester City, in the Champions League.

The fixture will mark Amorim's penultimate game as Sporting’s manager before he takes up the role at Old Trafford next Monday, 11th November. Sporting will host Pep Guardiola's side at the Estádio José Alvalade, and the Portuguese coach will be keen to make a lasting impression – with much of United's fanbase expected to tune in.

When questioned about the situation in his press conference on Monday, Amorim mentioned Sir Alex Ferguson, saying: "I know people will draw conclusions from this result, but it doesn't really concern me.

"If the result is negative, expectations will be tempered. If we win, they’ll think the new Alex Ferguson has arrived!"

Amorim laughed to himself at this point and continued: "I’m Sporting's manager until the 11th.

"I understand the interest, but for me, it’s just another game against a team from the best league in the world."

After United announced Amorim as their new head coach last week, Guardiola commented: "Welcome to United and to England. I’ll congratulate him on Tuesday.

"We crossed paths two or three seasons ago in the Champions League. Welcome. I’m not the one to advise my fellow managers. United have plenty of people who can inform him about the club’s situation. I can’t offer him any advice."

The Catalan has encountered Amorim twice as City’s manager, with their teams meeting in the Champions League last 16 in 2022. City defeated Sporting 5-0 in the first leg in Lisbon, followed by a goalless draw in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium.
