Erling Haaland continued his phenomenal Champions League scoring record with two more goals as Manchester City cruised to a 5-0 victory over Sparta Prague on Wednesday.

Phil Foden, John Stones, and Matheus Nunes were also on target as City set a new record for the most consecutive unbeaten games in the competition by an English club, surpassing Manchester United's previous record.

Haaland’s brace took his tally to a remarkable 44 goals in 42 Champions League appearances, with his first goal being an impressive backheel volley after Foden had opened the scoring.

He netted his second of the evening and his 13th of the season with a composed finish after Stones had headed in City’s third goal of the match, while a late penalty from Nunes sealed the emphatic win.

Three of City’s goals came in a blistering nine-minute spell in the second half, as Pep Guardiola’s side extended their unbeaten run in Europe’s elite competition to a record 26 matches.

This eclipsed the previous record of 25, set by Manchester United between 2007 and 2009. Since the 2022 semi-finals, City’s only defeat in the Champions League came via a penalty shoot-out, following two draws with Real Madrid.

The victory takes City to seven points after three matches in the group stage, putting them firmly on course for progression to the knockout rounds.

Despite injuries to Jack Grealish and Jeremy Doku, City dominated the game and made light work of their Czech opponents.

City got off to a flying start when Foden scored just three minutes into the match. The England international received a pass from Manuel Akanji outside the box, adjusted after a heavy touch, and drilled a low shot into the bottom corner.

Haaland almost doubled City’s lead soon after, rising to meet a cross with a powerful header that Sparta goalkeeper Peter Vindahl saved well to his right.

City controlled possession and pushed men forward, but Sparta came close to an equaliser when Angelo Preciado broke from deep and attempted an audacious lob, only for the ball to drift over the bar.

Sparta threatened again when City’s second-choice goalkeeper Stefan Ortega was forced to make a save from Veljko Birmancevic after Martin Vitik had cleared another Haaland header.

Foden continued to be a threat, testing Vindahl before curling an effort wide, while Savinho also missed the target after some skilful play in the box.

City thought they had doubled their lead early in the second half when Nathan Ake bundled the ball into the net from a corner, but the goal was disallowed for handball by the Dutchman.

Haaland inevitably put the game beyond Sparta’s reach with a spectacular goal just before the hour mark. Savinho provided the assist with a skilful run and cross from the right, and Haaland acrobatically flicked the ball into the net with his back to goal.

Stones added a fourth with a looping header from Nunes’ cross, and Haaland completed the scoring with a neat touch and finish inside the box after a slick passing move.

Haaland was substituted soon after, but City weren’t finished. Nunes added the fifth from the penalty spot after being fouled by Preciado, capping off a dominant performance.
