Leeds United announced plans on Monday to increase the capacity of their Elland Road stadium to 53,000.

The project, which will be carried out in phases to ensure the stadium remains operational, will see the ground expand by over 15,000 seats.

Despite currently competing in the second-tier Championship, Leeds remain one of England's most well-supported clubs.

Elland Road has been sold out for every match over the past six years, and the club has a waiting list of 26,000 for season tickets.

“The opportunity to revitalise a century-old stadium, combined with the legacy of Leeds United, is unprecedented,” said Paraag Marathe, Leeds chairman and president of the club's owners, 49ers Enterprises.

“Our plans reaffirm our commitment to the long-term success of the club, and I am excited that we will be able to welcome thousands more supporters to every match, in a stadium that retains the unique atmosphere of Elland Road.”

Once the project is completed, Elland Road will be the seventh-largest club stadium in England.
