Emma Raducanu’s injury woes resurfaced as she was forced to retire from her Korea Open quarter-final against top seed Daria Kasatkina.

The 21-year-old Briton had just lost the first set 6-1 before withdrawing, citing a foot injury.

Raducanu had previously defeated two top-50 opponents in Seoul, overcoming American Peyton Stearns and China’s Yue Yuan to reach the last eight.

Chasing only her second WTA Tour semi-final, having made the last four in Nottingham earlier in June, the 2021 US Open champion had her match against world number 13 Kasatkina postponed due to rain on Friday.

When the match resumed on Saturday, Raducanu – who earlier expressed a desire to compete in as many matches as possible before the season’s end – was broken in the second game. Though she broke back immediately, she could not maintain the momentum. After Kasatkina clinched the first set, Raducanu approached the net to shake hands, unable to continue due to her foot injury.
