Virgil van Dijk is determined to ensure Liverpool do not develop a 'habit' of losing home matches.

The Reds suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat at Anfield to Nottingham Forest following the September international break, disrupting Arne Slot’s flawless start to life in Merseyside. However, Liverpool responded with a commanding 3-1 comeback victory against AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League midweek.

Van Dijk, who has maintained an exceptional home record since his arrival midway through the 2017/18 season, addressed the Anfield crowd in his match programme notes prior to Saturday’s fixture against Bournemouth, urging his teammates to restore Anfield's formidable reputation.

“We are all aware that we were far below the required standard against Forest, and it hurts," Van Dijk stated.

"Anfield losses are rare for us, so naturally, questions were asked as we headed to Milan. I believe, apart from the first five minutes, we gave a resounding response.”

He added: “Bournemouth will undoubtedly pose a tough challenge. They are a well-organised side with quality players and will make it difficult for us. To secure the three points, we must be at our best.

"As I mentioned earlier, losing games at Anfield is not something we want to become accustomed to. Our reaction in Milan was strong, and now we want to give our supporters something to cheer about after last weekend’s disappointment.”

Liverpool have never lost a home match to Bournemouth, with only two defeats in their 22 encounters thus far.
