Ajax have reportedly reached an agreement to appoint Míchel Sánchez as their new head coach for next season, with the Spaniard now expected to leave Girona at the end of the current campaign.

The development comes at a critical moment for Girona, who are preparing for a decisive final-day clash against Elche at Montilivi on Saturday evening.

The Catalan side must secure victory to guarantee their survival in La Liga.

Míchel, whose current contract expires at the end of the season, has yet to publicly commit his future to Girona amid growing speculation surrounding a potential departure.

The 50-year-old has repeatedly attracted interest from clubs across Europe following an extraordinary spell with Girona, during which he transformed the club into one of Spanish football’s biggest success stories.

After guiding Girona back to La Liga, Míchel led the club to a historic third-place finish and secured their first-ever qualification for the UEFA Champions League just two years after promotion.

Ajax Close to Finalising Deal

According to reports from journalist Matteo Moretto, an agreement between Ajax and Míchel is now “99.9 per cent complete”, with the Dutch giants preparing for the Spaniard to take charge ahead of next season.

The move is reportedly being driven by Ajax sporting director Jordi Cruyff, who has long admired Míchel’s coaching philosophy.

Cruyff is said to have followed the Girona manager closely since his own time working at Barcelona.

German side Bayer Leverkusen are also believed to have made an approach for Míchel, although current indications suggest Ajax are firmly leading the race for his signature.

Girona Facing Emotional Farewell

Despite growing reports surrounding Míchel’s future, Girona’s immediate focus remains firmly on securing their top-flight status.

The club have yet to publicly discuss potential replacements, with survival in La Liga likely to significantly influence their plans in both the managerial and transfer markets.

Míchel himself will undoubtedly be desperate to avoid a painful ending to what has been a remarkable spell in charge should Girona suffer relegation on the final weekend of the season.

Widely regarded as the greatest manager in the club’s history, the Girona hierarchy and supporters are expected to hold the Spaniard in high regard regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s decisive encounter.
