Adam Yauch, more commonly know by his stage name MCA, died 10 years ago this month.

The artist born in Brooklyn, New York, made up 1/3rd of the punk and rap-trio The Beastie Boys, along with friends Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz and Michael "Mike-D" Diamond, which they formed in 1981.

By 1985, The Beastie Boys had moved on from the punk genre and into the rap scene, which was gaining lots of attention in the late 1980's.

On the 15th of November 1986, they dropped their first studio album Licensed To Ill, which was the first hip-hop album to top the US Billboard 200, and has sold over 10 million copies since it's first release.

The trio's success continued with with 1989's Paul's Boutique, 1992's Check Your Head, 1998's Hello Nasty (Their first album with future long time collaborator and honorary Beastie: Mix-Master-Mike), and the politically motivated 2004 album To The 5 Boroughs (The first Beastie Boys album released after 9/11).

Between 1996 and 2001, Yauch had organized the Tibet Freedom Concert: A series of shows that raised funds to aid Tibetan Independence from Communist China.

The Beastie Boys along with Ben Harper, Radiohead, Patti Smith, Bjork, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against The Machine, John Lee Hooker, and others helped raise billions to send foreign aid to the breakaway Chinese province.

In October 9th 2004, The Beastie Boys preformed their Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That! concert at Madison Square Garden with the proceeds being donated to the victims of 9/11.

In 2006, the concert footage was released on DVD and become one of the fastest selling concert videos in music history.

The Beastie Boys also did TV appearances.

They appeared on Matt Goerning's Futurama as themselves, and also did interviews on The Joan Rivers Show and The Late Show With David Letterman

In 2009, MCA announced that his had been diagnosed with Throat Cancer.

The news shocked the hip-hop and rap community in New York.

They had to cancel shows and delayed the release of their album Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 until 2011, whilst Adam received treatment.

After a successful surgery, he went back to making music and spreading awareness of Tibetan Independence.

In late 2011, Yauch announced that his cancer had returned and that he'd be seeking treatment.

Adam “MCA” Yauch passed away aged 47 on May 4th 2012 after loosing his second battle with Throat Cancer.

Tributes came pouring in from across the rap and hip hop world for the fallen Beastie and his family from artists Eminem, Run DMC, Mix-Master-Mike, Doug-E, and Weird Al Yankovic.

As well as respects being paid by the entire city of New York and the Jewish community.

Ad-Rock and Mike-D announced shortly after Adam's passing that The Beastie Boys would disband, as the two couldn't perform without him.

In 2013, Palmetto Playground in the borough of Brooklyn where Yauch grew up was renamed to Adam Yauch Park to honour the artist.

In 2015, Licensed To Ill was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America.

In 2016, a group of Neo-Nazis vandalized Adam Yauch Park by drawing swastikas and writing antisemitic remarks across the park.

Mike-D gave an address condemning antisemitism after the vandals were arrested, stating: “It is unacceptable for these individuals to tread with hostile intent on these grounds held sacred by not just myself or Brooklyn, but all the boroughs of New York City.

They trampled on the memory of a man who achieved great things because he was Jewish, that is clearly unacceptable in the 21st Century”.

Also in 2016, Mike-D and Ad-Rock appeared in the film Star Trek: Beyond as cameos, and the known Trekkies allowed for director Justin Lin to use their 1994 hit single Sabotage in the film.

On the 31st of August 2018, Eminem released his tenth studio album Kamikaze, which he dedicated to both the late Adam Yauch and The Beastie Boys.

Now in May 2022, 10 years after Yauch's passing and 11 years after The Beastie Boys released their last album, many younger hip hop and rap fans born after The Beastie Boys made a storm in New York and the world are beginning to discover the rap-trio's work.

Album sales for the defunct group have risen for the first time in nearly six years.

Both new listeners and veteran Beastie Boys fans from the early 1980's paid tribute on social media to Adam Yauch.

The Beastie Boys fan club Twitter account sent a message saying: “Adam Yauch died a decade ago.

He was many things: A pioneering hip hop artist, film maker, fashion designer, producer, an advocate for Tibetan Independence, and one of the most important voices of his generation”.

Another fan tweeted that: “Adam Yauch and The Beastie Boys brought New York City together after September 11th 2001, there will be no other group like them”.

Adam Yauch's legacy cannot be understated, as millions remember the late artist 10 years on, his life lives on inside the hearts and minds of New Yorkers and fans across the globe.
