Japan Airlines (JAL) was hit by a cyberattack on Thursday, disrupting its systems and potentially affecting flights. This follows similar attacks on other Japanese companies and Seattle-Tacoma Airport earlier this year.

According to AFP, Japan Airlines (JAL) was the target of a cyberattack on Thursday morning, which caused disruptions to both its internal and external systems.

The attack began at 7:24 AM local time (2224 GMT), and JAL confirmed the breach. In a post on X, the airline stated, “Today, from 7:24am, we have been under cyberattack on our internal and external network devices, causing issues with the systems that communicate with external systems. We expect this to affect both domestic and international flights.”

Although the airline acknowledged the attack, a JAL spokesperson informed AFP that there were no immediate updates regarding potential delays or cancellations at the time.

JAL, which is the second-largest airline in Japan after All Nippon Airways (ANA), joins a growing list of Japanese companies targeted by cyberattacks. In 2022, a cyberattack on a supplier to Toyota led to a suspension of production at the world’s top automaker's domestic plants for an entire day.

Earlier this year, in June, the Japanese video-sharing platform Niconico also suffered a large-scale cyberattack that forced it to suspend services, as reported by its operator.

This incident follows a similar disruption at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) earlier this year, where significant delays were caused by a "possible cyberattack." The attack reportedly led to an "internet and web systems outage" at the Port of Seattle, causing operational disturbances.
