President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin for "deliberately" choosing Christmas to launch a strike targeting power generating sites in several Ukrainian regions. While most of the missiles were intercepted by Ukrainian defense forces, there were successful hits, resulting in power outages in multiple areas.

Russia launched a combination of cruise and ballistic missiles at Ukraine's energy infrastructure on Christmas Eve, Ukrainian officials reported. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the timing of the attack, calling it a "deliberate choice" by Russia to strike on Christmas, a date he described as "inhumane." More than 70 missiles, including ballistic ones, and over 100 attack drones were fired in the assault.

Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko confirmed the attack targeted the country's energy sector, leading to power outages in several regions. The Ukrainian military reported successfully intercepting over 50 missiles and a "significant number" of drones, but some hits were made. Efforts to restore power were underway.

The attacks caused casualties, with one person killed and three others injured in Kherson. A missile strike in Kharkiv injured six people and damaged civilian infrastructure. In Dnipro, air strikes targeted the region's power system, and a search and rescue operation was conducted after Christmas Eve strikes killed one and wounded 17.

Ukraine's largest private energy company, DTEK, reported that its power plants were also targeted, marking the 13th massive attack on Ukraine's energy sector this year.

US President Joe Biden condemned the attack as "outrageous" and vowed continued arms support for Ukraine, emphasizing that the aim of the assault was to disrupt access to heat and electricity during winter.
