One person has tragically died, and several others have sustained serious injuries following a boat collision in Clearwater, Florida, according to local police reports. The incident involved the Clearwater Ferry, which had 45 people aboard, including two crew members. The ferry was struck by another boat, which subsequently fled the scene. Authorities later identified the vessel involved through the efforts of another law enforcement agency, Clearwater government officials confirmed.
In response to the severity and number of injuries, the fire department declared a mass casualty event. Two of the injured individuals were airlifted to the hospital by helicopter. All the casualties were from the ferry, which ultimately came to a stop on a nearby sandbar.
Police were alerted to the crash at 20:43 local time on Sunday (00:43 GMT on Monday). The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will lead the investigation into the incident, with assistance from the Coast Guard.
