Modi Visits Mauritius to Boost Ties, Attend National Day Celebrations

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mauritius on Tuesday for a two-day visit, during which he will serve as the guest of honour at the island nation's 57th National Day celebrations on Wednesday.
Upon his arrival, he was welcomed at the airport by Mauritius’ Prime Minister, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, who returned to office for his third term in 2024. During his visit, Modi is scheduled to hold meetings with the country’s top leadership.
A key focus of these discussions will be the enhancement of bilateral and strategic relations, as well as efforts to strengthen their partnership for security and development in the Indian Ocean region.
Ahead of the official talks, Modi paid tribute to Mauritius' former Prime Minister, Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, by laying a wreath in his botanical garden.
His visit comes just days after U.S. President Donald Trump expressed support for a potential agreement between Mauritius and Britain regarding the future of the joint U.S.-British military base in the Chagos Islands. India has historically supported Mauritius’ claim over the Indian Ocean archipelago.
