Leeds United remain top of the Championship, but Sheffield United and Burnley are closing in after both secured crucial victories on Saturday.

Daniel Farke’s side, who do not play until Sunday when they travel to Portsmouth, were forced to watch their promotion rivals pick up valuable three points.

Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United moved level with Leeds on 76 points following a 1-0 victory over Preston North End at Bramall Lane, with Tyrese Campbell scoring the decisive goal in the 56th minute. The Blades now sit second, trailing Leeds only on goal difference, although they have played one game more.

Meanwhile, third-placed Burnley reduced the gap to just two points after a resounding 4-0 win over Luton Town. Scott Parker’s side capitalised on the Hatters being reduced to 10 men, with Marc McGuinness’ own goal opening the scoring before Lyle Foster, Josh Brownhill, and Ashley Barnes completed the rout. Like Sheffield United, Burnley have also played one game more than Leeds.

With both of their closest challengers securing victories, Leeds' trip to Fratton Park on Sunday becomes even more significant in the race for promotion.

Farke’s Pre-Match Thoughts

Speaking ahead of the crucial fixture against Portsmouth, Farke acknowledged the threat posed by their opponents.

“For a newly promoted side to be eight points above the relegation zone is impressive. They are a dangerous team. We expect resilience from them, and we know they will be backed by a passionate home crowd. I expect a pragmatic approach from Portsmouth.

“We need to be prepared for their physicality and direct style of play. Players like [Josh] Murphy and [Colby] Bishop have the quality to create and score goals, so we must be at our best in all aspects of the game.”

Leeds’ Strong February Form

Leeds enjoyed an outstanding February, winning all five of their Championship matches and scoring an impressive 18 goals in the process. Their exceptional run of form earned Farke the Manager of the Month award.

Reflecting on the accolade, Farke said:

“Manager of the Year wouldn’t be bad! But yes, I’ll take it. It’s a reward for the entire group and staff. Winning every match in February has put us in a strong position.

“However, the focus remains on the bigger picture—it’s about the season, not just one month. These awards end up in a cupboard. Perhaps in 30 years, with a glass of wine, I’ll look back on them. But right now, I’m not in reflection mode. I probably don’t appreciate them as much as I should.”

With the Championship title race intensifying, all eyes will be on Leeds as they look to maintain their position at the summit with a vital result against Portsmouth.
