The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the National Industrial Decarbonisation Programme (NIDP), promoting cleaner technologies and energy efficiency in alignment with global climate goals.

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas and carbon emissions in the country’s industrial sector.

The Minister of Environment, Malam Balarabe Lawal, made this known during a stakeholders' engagement workshop on the National Industrial Decarbonisation Programme (NIDP) on Thursday in Abuja.

Represented by Mr. Mahmud Kambari, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Lawal stated that the workshop was aimed at transitioning the nation’s industrial sector toward a low-carbon economy.

He emphasized that the engagement reflected the collective commitment of the government and stakeholders to fostering a sustainable and environmentally responsible industrial sector in Nigeria.

Lawal acknowledged the crucial role industrial activities play in driving economic growth, creating employment, and contributing to national development. However, he also noted that these activities significantly contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, which in turn drive climate change and environmental degradation.

"The inauguration of the NIDP marks a strategic step in Nigeria’s journey toward achieving net-zero emissions," he said.

"Through this initiative, we aim to facilitate the adoption of cleaner technologies, promote resource efficiency, and support industries in transitioning to low-carbon operations.

"On our part, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Environment and its agencies, remains committed to creating an enabling environment for industries to thrive sustainably," he added.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Innocent Barikor, the Director-General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), described the occasion as a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s pursuit of a sustainable and resilient future.

"The National Industrial Decarbonisation Programme represents our firm commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning our industrial sector toward a low-carbon economy," Barikor stated.

He further explained that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s international commitments under the Paris Agreement and supports the country’s ambitious domestic goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060.

"By adopting decarbonisation strategies and establishing a clear regulatory framework, we can significantly reduce these emissions while simultaneously enhancing our competitiveness in international markets.

"The road to industrial decarbonisation is challenging, but it also presents numerous opportunities that promise long-term environmental and economic benefits.

"By working together, we can ensure that our industries not only comply with global standards but also thrive in a low-carbon economy," he added.

In his remarks, Rep. Garba Mohammed, Chairman of NESREA’s Governing Board, emphasized that the event represented a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to promote sustainable industrial development and environmental stewardship.

He stated that the initiative seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and transition the country’s industries toward a greener future.

"Our industrial sector is a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economy, yet it is also a significant source of carbon emissions.

"As custodians of the environment, it is our responsibility to lead the charge in transforming industrial practices, adopting cleaner technologies, enhancing energy efficiency, and establishing robust mechanisms for compliance and carbon credit trading," he stated.
