A Tunisian court sentenced eight people to death for the 2013 assassination of opposition figure Mohamed Brahmi, with a ninth suspect receiving five years in prison.

A Tunisian court has sentenced eight defendants to death in connection with the 2013 assassination of leftist opposition figure Mohamed Brahmi, according to local reports. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday.

Brahmi was assassinated outside his residence on July 25, 2013.

“The Fifth Criminal Chamber, which specializes in terrorism cases at the Court of First Instance in Tunis, has sentenced eight defendants to death, while a ninth defendant, who remains on the run, has been sentenced to five years in prison in the case of the assassination of martyr Mohamed Brahmi,” Tunisia News Agency TAP posted on X.

The defendants faced multiple charges, including "attempting to change the state's nature" and "inciting armed conflict." Additionally, three of the defendants received extra death sentences for "deliberate participation in premeditated murder," local media reported.

Brahmi was a member of the Movement of the People Party, which belonged to the same coalition as Chokri Belaid, another opposition politician who was assassinated in February of the same year, according to Anadolu News Agency.

Following the attack, Brahmi was rushed to the hospital, but he was later pronounced dead, the Tunisian Interior Ministry said in a statement at the time.

The statement also revealed that Brahmi had sustained eleven bullet wounds when he was admitted to the hospital.
