The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called on Türkiye to expand its support to countries in the region as they strive to address security challenges.
ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Touray, made this appeal during a farewell visit by the outgoing Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Hidayet Bayraktar, at the commission's headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
Touray commended Türkiye’s contributions to Africa and its role on the global stage, urging continued support in the fight against terrorist groups and efforts to ensure peace and security in West Africa.
"Türkiye is a major partner of Africa and a privileged partner of ECOWAS. Its leadership is hailed and appreciated throughout the African continent," Touray stated.
He further emphasized that insecurity remains a significant challenge for ECOWAS, noting that no single member state can effectively tackle it alone.
In response, the outgoing Turkish ambassador, Hidayet Bayraktar, reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to strengthening its support in combating violent extremism and terrorism while promoting peace, security, and stability in the region.
Over the years, Türkiye has deepened its military, economic, and cultural ties with many African nations, positioning itself as an alternative partner to Western powers on the continent. Several African countries have acquired military equipment, including drones, from Türkiye to enhance their defense capabilities.
