Carney Chukwuemeka Joins Borussia Dortmund on Loan from Chelsea
"I’m really excited and blessed to be here and to represent this great club. I can’t wait to play in front of the fans at Signal Iduna Park and contribute to our success," Chukwuemeka said.
Dortmund have the option to make the 21-year-old’s move permanent. His time at Chelsea has been plagued by injuries since his transfer from Premier League rivals Aston Villa in the summer of 2022.
Chukwuemeka rose through the academy ranks at Villa before making his Premier League debut at the age of 18. He has since made 37 top-flight appearances and has featured for Chelsea in this season’s UEFA Conference League.
The Austria-born midfielder now hopes to kick on at Dortmund, a club renowned for developing young talents. English players such as Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham, and current forward Jamie Bynoe-Gittens have all thrived in the famous black-and-yellow shirt.
"Carney is an exceptionally talented box-to-box midfielder who has made a strong impression in the Premier League at a young age," said Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl. "His dynamism, attacking mentality, and confidence, combined with his outstanding footballing ability, make him an exciting addition to our squad.
"His development had stalled somewhat in London, but despite not playing regularly, we believe he has immense potential. We hope that Carney can rediscover the qualities that make him such a special player here."
Chukwuemeka could be included in Dortmund’s squad for Saturday’s match against VfB Stuttgart, which will mark Niko Kovač’s first game in charge since replacing Nuri Şahin as head coach. The Black-Yellows currently sit 11th in the Bundesliga table, four points adrift of the top four.
