Russia: Moscow Blast Kills Ukrainian Separatist, State Media Reports
A powerful explosion struck an upscale luxury apartment complex in Moscow on Monday, resulting in the death of Ukrainian separatist Armen Sarkisyan, according to Russian news outlets.
Russia's state-run TASS news agency reported that Sarkisyan, a Ukrainian individual accused by Kyiv of assisting Russian forces in their war efforts, was the intended target of the blast. The explosion killed one person and left three others injured.
RIA, another state news agency, initially reported that law enforcement officials claimed Sarkisyan was in critical condition and that part of his leg was being amputated.
TASS quoted a law enforcement official saying, "The assassination attempt on Sarkisyan was carefully planned and ordered. Investigators are currently identifying those responsible for commissioning the crime." However, there has been no independent confirmation of Russia's claims regarding the incident.
The explosion occurred in the lobby of the "Scarlet Sails" complex, just as a man, accompanied by bodyguards, entered the building, according to Russian media. While early reports indicated that Sarkisyan died instantly in the attack, later accounts suggested that he survived and was transported to the hospital.
Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the country has experienced a series of targeted assassinations and explosions. In December, Russian General Igor Kirillov was killed in a bomb blast outside a Moscow apartment complex, an attack for which Kyiv later took responsibility.
Ukraine has yet to comment on Monday’s bombing. In December, Ukraine’s SBU security service referred to Sarkisyan as a "crime boss" in the Donetsk region and stated that he was officially suspected of participating in and assisting "illegal armed groups."
