Gunmen Kill 10 and Displace Many in Attack on Ebonyi Community
Gunmen killed 10 civilians and displaced many others in an attack on the Amegu Nkalaha community in southeastern Nigeria’s Ishielu local government area of Ebonyi state, according to police reports on Monday.
The attackers, suspected to be members of the separatist group IPOB, also set fire to several homes and destroyed properties, as stated by police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu to Anadolu news agency.
"Several houses were also burnt selectively in the area, and other properties destroyed. Upon receipt of the information, we drafted police operatives to the area," Ukandu added.
"We are currently investigating the incident while normalcy has returned to the area," he said.
The southeastern region of Nigeria has experienced frequent attacks by armed groups advocating for the creation of a separate state of Biafra. This agitation traces back to the late 1960s, which led to the Nigerian Civil War, resulting in an estimated one million deaths.
Currently, Nigerian security forces are also engaged in efforts to combat various armed groups, including Boko Haram and kidnapping gangs in the northern part of the country.
