Bayern Munich winger Mathys Tel has rejected a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.
Mathys Tel Rejects Tottenham Move Despite Daniel Levy’s Munich Talks
After informing Bayern of his desire to leave before the end of the January transfer window, Spurs swiftly moved to secure the 19-year-old’s signature.
Reports indicate that a €60 million (£50.2m) deal between Spurs and Bayern was agreed on Thursday, with the transfer hinging on Tel’s acceptance of Ange Postecoglou’s offer.
According to Sky Germany, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy travelled to Munich on Friday in an effort to persuade Tel to join the club.
However, the report claims that Tel has turned down Tottenham’s offer and will now explore alternative options before the transfer window closes on 3rd February.
When asked about Spurs’ pursuit of Tel, Postecoglou admitted on Friday:
"Not a great deal.
"I usually find out at the tail end of this stuff what’s going on. Obviously, we’re exploring some opportunities in the last couple of days of the window to see what we can do. But nothing’s across my desk yet."
Tel’s decision comes as a boost for Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Aston Villa, all of whom remain in the race to sign the French winger before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Chelsea had already made an approach earlier this month, but it is understood that Tel is hesitant to move to Stamford Bridge due to the intense competition for places in Enzo Maresca’s attack.
United have also enquired about Tel’s availability, though they would need to offload Alejandro Garnacho first to fund a move. Both Chelsea and Napoli have held discussions over a deal for Garnacho this month, but United are reportedly holding out for a £55 million transfer fee.
Arsenal were also linked with Tel this week, though Mikel Arteta’s side appear to be prioritising a move for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins. However, their £60 million bid for the striker was rejected earlier this week.
