Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly reached a verbal agreement in principle with Bayern Munich for the signing of winger Mathys Tel in a deal worth £50 million.

The 19-year-old Frenchman has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United, all of whom have been monitoring his situation at Bayern as the January transfer window nears its conclusion.

Tel is keen to secure a move away from the Bundesliga champions in search of more regular playing time. Although it was previously indicated that his preference would be to join Arsenal or United, it is Spurs who have taken decisive action.

According to The Times, Tottenham have struck a verbal agreement with Bayern, and the teenager is expected to complete the move before Monday’s transfer deadline.

Bayern had initially preferred to send Tel out on loan rather than sanction a permanent transfer. However, Tottenham’s offer—reportedly totalling £50 million, including add-ons—has convinced the German club to consider a sale, provided the player decides to proceed with the move.

Tel is set to weigh up his options alongside his agent in the coming days. While Spurs have moved swiftly to agree terms with Bayern, it remains uncertain whether Tel will opt for a move to North London.

Earlier on Thursday, reports suggested that Tel was in no rush to make a final decision as he carefully assesses the options available to him.

The young winger has made just 14 appearances for Bayern this season, providing a single assist. Despite limited game time, he remains highly regarded at the club, having scored 10 goals in all competitions last season.

Spurs have accelerated their pursuit of Tel in an attempt to fend off competition from their rivals. Their technical director, Johan Lange, is currently in Germany and attended Bayern’s Champions League victory over Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday night. Tottenham and Bayern maintain a positive working relationship following negotiations over the transfers of Harry Kane and Eric Dier.

Tottenham are currently dealing with an injury crisis, with several key players sidelined, including Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner, Wilson Odobert, and James Maddison.

Meanwhile, Richarlison was forced off with a groin issue during last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Leicester City. It remains unclear whether the Brazilian striker will also face a spell on the sidelines.
