Meta has agreed to pay $25 million to President Donald Trump to settle a 2021 lawsuit he filed after his Facebook and Instagram accounts were suspended following the January 6 Capitol riots.

Meta has agreed to pay President Donald Trump $25 million (€24 million) to resolve a lawsuit he filed in 2021, alleging wrongful censorship by Facebook and Instagram following the U.S. Capitol riot. The settlement, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, allocates about $22 million of the total amount to fund Trump’s future presidential library. The remaining portion will cover legal fees and compensate other plaintiffs involved in the case.

Despite the settlement, Meta does not admit to any wrongdoing, according to a statement from Meta spokesperson Andy Stone.

Trump's legal action stemmed from his criticism of the suspension of his social media accounts after the January 6 Capitol attack. In 2021, Mark Zuckerberg condemned the events surrounding the attack on Congress and posted a statement on Facebook, denouncing Trump's actions and his efforts to disrupt the transition of power to Joe Biden.

However, Trump has since softened his stance toward Zuckerberg, who attended Trump’s presidential inauguration earlier this month in Washington.

In the wake of the lawsuit, Meta has made changes to its content moderation policies, including ending its fact-checking program designed to prevent the spread of misinformation on its platforms. These adjustments have been welcomed by Trump and other Republicans, who claim the previous program was biased against their political views.

Meanwhile, Meta has reported impressive financial results for 2024, highlighting a significant surge in both profits and revenue. The company announced its net income for the year increased by 59%, reaching $62.36 billion. In the fourth quarter (October-December), profits rose by 49% to $20.84 billion.

Zuckerberg shared his vision for Meta's future, stating the company's ambition to lead the artificial intelligence (AI) race. He expressed optimism about the U.S. administration’s support for American technological leadership, which he believes will foster further progress and innovation. Zuckerberg emphasized his confidence in the future as Meta continues to expand its AI infrastructure in 2025.
