Gerard Deulofeu and Udinese have mutually agreed to terminate the player’s contract, but the Spaniard has assured fans, “If I return to football, it will be with this jersey.”
Deulofeu and Udinese Announce Contract Termination After Prolonged Injury Struggles
The 30-year-old Spain international, who boasts four senior caps and one goal for his country, has endured a prolonged injury nightmare. His troubles began with a knee problem in November 2022, which led to surgery in January 2023. Although there were moments of apparent progress, setbacks repeatedly hindered his recovery.
Deulofeu last featured for Udinese in January 2023 during a match against Sampdoria, marking the end of his 68 appearances for the club. His contract, originally set to run until June 2026, has now been prematurely terminated as he continues his recovery.
In a heartfelt video and joint statement with Udinese, Deulofeu detailed his ordeal:
“I tore my anterior cruciate ligament two years ago against Napoli but managed to play against Sampdoria despite the tear. After that match, the bad news came — I needed surgery.
“Following the operation, I suffered an infection in the cartilage. This is a tough injury to overcome, as the bones grind against each other, making it far more complicated than a typical injury.
“For two years, I’ve been battling something that defies biology. While I feel better now than I did a few months ago, we’ll have to see what the future holds.
“I’ve always had an incredible relationship with Udinese, and their support has meant so much to me. If I ever return to football, it will be with this jersey, in gratitude for everything the club and its fans have done for me. Although we’ve decided to terminate the contract, the bond and support remain special.”
Deulofeu, a graduate of Barcelona’s famed youth academy, has had a varied career, playing for Everton, Sevilla, AC Milan, Watford, and eventually joining Udinese in 2020.
During his time in Serie A, he made 80 appearances, scoring 20 goals and providing 16 assists, leaving an indelible mark on the club and its supporters.
