Watford have signed Republic of Ireland U21 international James Abankwah on loan from Udinese for the remainder of the season, as they strengthen their push for Premier League promotion.

The 19-year-old centre-back has made eight appearances for the Serie A club this term, following a successful loan spell at Charlton Athletic. Watford and Udinese are both owned by the Pozzo family, and the Italian side were reportedly reluctant to let Abankwah leave, given his impressive performances.

Watford manager Tom Cleverley expressed his excitement about the signing, emphasising the young defender’s potential and suitability for the team.

“James is a very promising addition to the squad. He brings speed, physicality, and a strong appreciation for the art of defending,” Cleverley told the club's official website.

“We identified him as the ideal player to fill a gap in our squad. Udinese’s manager was understandably keen to keep him, but we believe he will bring even more value to us. I’m delighted he has joined us.”

Currently eighth in the Championship and just three points off the play-off positions, Watford face Derby County this weekend as they aim to climb the table.

Abankwah, a former St Patrick’s Athletic player, joins a growing contingent of Irish talent at Vicarage Road, alongside Festy Ebosele and Rocco Vata, who have been making a positive impact at the club.
