Türkiye 'Neutralises' 9 PKK/YPG Terrorists in Northern Syria
Turkish security forces "neutralised" nine PKK/YPG terrorists in northern Syria, according to Türkiye's Ministry of National Defence. The terrorists were reportedly attempting an attack on Turkish soldiers. The ministry shared the update on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, affirming that Turkey is committed to eliminating terrorism at its source. It added, "Our fight will go on until the terrorists disappear from this geography."
The term "neutralised" is used by Turkish authorities to indicate that the terrorists were either killed, captured, or surrendered.
Since 2016, Turkey has conducted three major anti-terror operations in northern Syria: Euphrates Shield (2016), Olive Branch (2018), and Peace Spring (2019). These operations aim to prevent the establishment of a "terror corridor" and ensure the peaceful settlement of residents in the region.
The PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the US, and the EU, has been responsible for over 40,000 deaths in its 40-year terror campaign against Turkey, including women, children, and infants. The YPG is the PKK's Syrian offshoot. The PKK/YPG has attempted to exploit instability following the fall of the Bashar Assad regime to strengthen efforts in establishing a terrorist corridor along the Turkish-Syrian border.
