Cuba intervenes in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
AFP reported that Cuba has submitted a formal declaration to join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, as announced by the court on Monday.
Cuba’s declaration was filed under Article 63 of the Statute of the Court, indicating its intention to intervene in the case concerning the Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip, according to the court's statement.
South Africa initiated proceedings against Israel in December 2023, alleging violations of the Genocide Convention regarding Palestinians in Gaza. Since then, several countries, including Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya, Mexico, Palestine, Spain, and Türkiye, have joined the case.
Israel has maintained its aggressive military campaign in Gaza following a Hamas attack in October 2023, disregarding a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire. According to local health authorities, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of nearly 46,600 people, the majority being women and children, with over 105,000 injured.
The offensive has displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza. An ongoing blockade has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, causing severe shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, leaving most of the territory devastated and uninhabitable.
