David Moyes is set to be announced as Everton’s new manager after the club parted ways with Sean Dyche.
David Moyes agrees Everton return following Sean Dyche's sacking
Dyche was dismissed following discussions with the Friedkin Group earlier this week, during which he reportedly told the club's new owners that he believed he had taken the team as far as he could. The Toffees find themselves embroiled in yet another relegation battle, despite Dyche steering them to safety in the previous two campaigns.
His departure was confirmed just hours before Everton’s FA Cup third-round tie against Peterborough, a match the Toffees won 2-0 under interim management from Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman.
Moyes, who returns to Goodison Park with Everton just one point above the relegation zone, previously managed the club for 11 years, overseeing more than 500 matches before leaving in 2013 to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
Highlights of Moyes' first tenure on Merseyside include a fourth-place finish in the 2004-05 Premier League season, which secured a place in the Champions League qualifying rounds, and an appearance in the 2009 FA Cup final.
The 61-year-old, who left his most recent position at West Ham United at the end of last season, is expected to sign a two-and-a-half-year contract. During his second spell with West Ham, Moyes secured Europa Conference League triumph but often faced criticism over his playing style – a concern similarly raised during Dyche’s tenure. However, the Friedkin Group reportedly view Moyes as a reliable choice to stabilise the club during a challenging period.
Under Dyche’s management, Everton endured financial instability, including failed takeovers under Farhad Moshiri and an eight-point deduction last season due to breaches of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Everton fans will hope Moyes’ return marks the beginning of a new chapter. Symbolically, the Scotsman will lead the club during its final months at Goodison Park, with the move to the new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock set to take place next season.
