Kizza Besigye, a longtime critic of Uganda's strongman President Yoweri Museveni, has been a vocal opponent of the government's policies for years. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, raised concerns over his detention, questioning why he was being held in a military prison despite not being a soldier. She emphasized that his imprisonment in such a facility was both unnecessary and unjust.
Prominent Ugandan Opposition Leader Kizza Besigye Kidnapped and Jailed
Winnie Byanyima, the wife of well-known opposition politician Kizza Besigye, stated on Wednesday that her husband had been abducted in Kenya and was currently imprisoned in Uganda.
"I request the government of Uganda to release my husband, Dr. Kizza Besigye, from where he is being held immediately," Byanyima appealed.
Besigye made an appearance in a Kampala military court on Wednesday, facing charges that included unlawful possession of firearms. A Reuters witness at the court confirmed that he was remanded to prison until December 2. Besigye denied all the charges leveled against him.
"We, his family and his lawyers, demand to see him. He is not a soldier. Why is he being held in a military jail?" questioned Byanyima, who serves as the executive director of the United Nations HIV/AIDS agency (UNAIDS).
