AFCON Qualifiers: Ghana's Uphill Battle Against Angola
A comprehensive 4-0 defeat for Sudan at the hands of Niger has breathed new life into Ghana's hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
With Sudan’s setback, Ghana now has a renewed possibility of advancing to the tournament, provided they can secure a win against group leaders Angola in their final group stage match on Friday.
In addition to overcoming Angola, the Black Stars will also need to triumph at home against Niger on Monday to have a chance of surpassing second-placed Sudan and securing one of the qualifying spots for the 2025 competition in Morocco.
However, Ghana’s task is far from easy, as defeating Angola, who have been in outstanding form, will be a formidable challenge. Angola has already secured their spot in the tournament, having won their last eight matches while conceding only two goals.
On the other hand, Ghana has been hit by a series of injuries, with key players such as Antoine Semenyo, Inaki Williams, and Thomas Partey unavailable for selection.
Both teams are in dire need of points, with Angola aiming to consolidate their position at the top of Group F, while Ghana must win to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, is relying on his core group of players, including Mohammed Kudus, Gideon Mensah, and Joseph Wollacott, to steer the team through this critical phase of their AFCON campaign.
Addo expressed confidence in his squad's readiness, telling local media, "Yeah, the boys look sharp and in really good condition. It's a good atmosphere. We know about the importance of this match. I'm looking forward to seeing them all. Especially the new players, they can prove themselves."
The pressure is on Ghana to deliver, but Angola's impressive momentum and the advantage of playing on home soil make them the favorites heading into the match.
