Police report that at least 35 people were killed and dozens more injured when a vehicle struck pedestrians. The driver has been taken into custody, but the motive behind the incident is still unknown.

Police in Zhuhai, a city in southern China, reported on Tuesday that at least 35 people have died and 43 others have been injured after a driver rammed his vehicle into a group of individuals who were exercising outside a sports center. Authorities have not yet determined whether the incident was accidental, but they have confirmed that the 62-year-old driver has been taken into custody.

The man, who has only been identified by his last name, Fan, reportedly drove a small SUV through the gate of the sports center, where he proceeded to crash into people who were exercising along the internal roads of the facility. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Fan attempting to harm himself with a knife. They quickly intervened, stopping him and taking him to the hospital for medical treatment.

According to police, the driver is currently in a coma after inflicting severe injuries to his neck and other parts of his body and is unable to undergo interrogation at this time.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has instructed that all local authorities be mobilized to assist and rescue those affected by the incident. He emphasized that the suspect must face punishment “in accordance with the law.”

At the time of the incident, many residents were gathered outside the sports center, utilizing the running track and soccer field. The tragic event appears to have occurred on Monday evening, though by Tuesday morning, much of the footage and commentary about the incident had been removed by Chinese censors from social media.

However, media shared by dissident blogger Li Ying depicted injured individuals lying on the track, with firefighters performing CPR on victims in the aftermath of the crash.

The timing of the incident coincides with the annual Airshow China event being held in Zhuhai this week. The event showcases China’s latest innovations in both civilian and military aviation, with top Russian officials and other international guests expected to attend.
