US Envoy to Kenya, Meg Whitman, Resigns Following Trump's Victory
Days after Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election, the US ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, submitted her resignation letter.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Whitman announced, "Today, I announced to my team at the US embassy that I submitted my resignation to President Joe Biden. It has been an honour and privilege to serve the American people through strengthening our partnership with Kenya."
During her tenure, Whitman developed a strong relationship with Kenyan President William Ruto, which facilitated Ruto's state visit to Washington in May, marking the first such visit by an African leader in 16 years.
Reflecting on her time in office, which began in 2022, Whitman highlighted her efforts to enhance trade, security, and healthcare collaboration between the US and Kenya. She also spoke of her success in attracting more American businesses to invest in Kenya, citing historic highs in trade, job creation, and US investment.
"I also played a role in elevating Kenya to the status of the first major non-NATO ally in sub-Saharan Africa, a significant achievement during my tenure," she said.
Whitman noted that, as with all US ambassadors, she served at the request of the President. She remarked, "The American people have spoken, and a new president will be inaugurated in January."
In her statement, Whitman expressed confidence that US-Kenya relations would remain strong. "I have no doubt that our 60 years of partnership will continue to strengthen and serve Americans and Kenyans," she concluded.
Her resignation leaves Charge d'Affaires Marc Dillard in charge of the US Embassy as the transition to new leadership under the incoming administration takes place.
