Liverpool ascended to the top of the Premier League with a commanding 3-0 victory over Bournemouth, while Manchester United were left frustrated in a goalless stalemate against Crystal Palace on Saturday. Nicolas Jackson netted a brace as Chelsea breezed to a 3-0 triumph at West Ham, with Aston Villa level on points at the top after overturning a deficit to beat Wolves 3-1.

Liverpool experienced an early setback under new manager Arne Slot when Nottingham Forest shocked Anfield a week ago. However, the Reds bounced back impressively, dismantling Bournemouth before half-time. Luis Diaz, who was rested for Liverpool's impressive 3-1 win against AC Milan in midweek as they kicked off their Champions League campaign, returned to the starting line-up and made an immediate impact.

The Colombian netted twice in quick succession. Diaz capitalised on Kepa Arrizabalaga's misjudgement, seizing on Ibrahima Konaté's long pass, rounding the stranded Spanish goalkeeper, and slotting the ball into an empty net.

Trent Alexander-Arnold then set up Diaz for his fifth goal of the season. Darwin Núñez, making his first start of the season, ended a 14-match goal drought at club level in style by curling the ball into the far corner. The emphatic win sees Liverpool overtake Manchester City and Aston Villa, both of whom also have 12 points, on goal difference.

“My first thought was, ‘Why is he shooting?’ He freed himself from the defender, who was on the ground, but moments later the ball hit the post and went in. Perhaps he’s a better player than I was in my playing days!” Slot remarked on Núñez’s superb strike.

United’s return to Selhurst Park, their first since suffering a humiliating 4-0 defeat towards the end of last season, saw them avoid another embarrassing loss, but the performance was far from memorable. Erik ten Hag’s faltering side could not find a way past winless Palace. United, with only two wins from their opening five league matches, were indebted to Andre Onana, who produced a brilliant double save to deny Eddie Nketiah and Ismaïla Sarr.

In North London, Tottenham eased the pressure on Ange Postecoglou with a 3-1 win over Brentford. Spurs had won just one of their first four league matches, continuing a decline in form that began at the tail end of last season. Bryan Mbeumo gave Brentford the lead with a stunning volley after just 22 seconds.

Tottenham responded swiftly to quell any discontent among the home supporters. Dominic Solanke opened his account for Spurs with a simple tap-in after Mark Flekken parried James Maddison’s shot. Brennan Johnson’s precise low drive put Spurs ahead before Maddison sealed the victory with his first goal since March, five minutes from time.

Villa also mounted a comeback for their fourth win in five matches, following Matheus Cunha’s opener for Wolves midway through the first half. Ollie Watkins equalised with a deflected effort, and Ezri Konsa’s rare goal gave Villa the lead before substitute Jhon Durán continued his prolific form with his fourth goal of the season, all from the bench.

Chelsea extended their strong start under new manager Enzo Maresca as Jackson’s brace saw them sweep aside a woeful West Ham at the London Stadium. The Senegalese striker has now netted four goals in five Premier League appearances, with two clinical finishes past Alphonse Areola as West Ham's defence crumbled. Jackson then turned provider for Cole Palmer, who completed the scoring just two minutes into the second half.

West Ham’s dismal run continued, having lost their first three home league games for the first time in their history, marking an inauspicious beginning for new manager Julen Lopetegui.

Fulham eased to a 3-1 win over a lacklustre Newcastle at Craven Cottage. Ipswich salvaged a point in a thrilling encounter between the newly-promoted sides, as they scored deep into stoppage time to secure a 1-1 draw against Southampton.

Everton and Leicester are still searching for their first wins of the season after playing out a 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium.

Today’s marquee match will see reigning champions Manchester City face Arsenal, who have finished runners-up to Pep Guardiola’s side in each of the past two seasons.
