Fernando Ricksen has been honoured with a special tribute kit by Fortuna Sittard.
Fernando Ricksen Tribute Kit Released as Rangers Legend Remembered with Special Nod to Time at Ibrox
Today, 18 September, marks five years since the Rangers icon sadly lost his brave battle against motor neurone disease. The club where he began and ended his professional playing career has released a specially designed kit in tribute to the club hero. The top features a holographic logo—never before used in Dutch professional football—which transitions from the Fortuna logo to a powerful silhouette of Ricksen. The shirt also displays the motto 'Never Give Up' on the neck of the kit, which the club says refers to his 'unprecedented fighting spirit'.
The red and blue top, paired with white shorts and red and blue socks, also nods to his time in Glasgow with Rangers, where he captured the hearts of fans during his six-year spell. Sittard will wear the special kit twice this week, as they take on Dutch giants Ajax away tonight before hosting PSV this weekend.
A statement on the club's website read: "The specially designed kit is an ode to Fernando Ricksen and will go straight into the history books because of a unique badge. The kit features a holographic logo, which has never been used before in Dutch professional football. This pioneering tribute to Ricksen sees the Fortuna logo seamlessly transition from multiple angles into a powerful silhouette of Fernando Ricksen.
"Furthermore, the striking motto 'Never Give Up' is incorporated into the neck, referring to Fernando's unprecedented fighting spirit. Finally, the colours of the kit reflect his time in Glasgow, where he also conquered the hearts of many fans with his passion and dedication."
The statement continued: "We could not have set up this campaign without the help of several partners. For example, 51North and Robey played a crucial role in the design of the kit, and CULT produced a beautiful launch video. We would also like to thank Rangers FC, Oswalds Bar, and all the former teammates for their willingness and hospitality in creating the unique content. Finally, a special thanks to Stichting ALS for helping to make some wonderful initiatives possible that will hopefully raise a significant amount for the foundation."
The club also released a social media video for the campaign, showcasing Ricksen in action for both clubs during his career and heartfelt moments from his brave battle. Several Rangers legends, including Arthur Numan and Michael Mols, took part in the campaign video.
