Erling Haaland could be on the verge of surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo's remarkable record for the fewest matches required to score 100 goals.

The Manchester City striker is expected to start in their opening Champions League encounter against Inter Milan on Wednesday, which will be broadcast live on talkSPORT.

Haaland netted twice in City’s 2-1 victory over Brentford on Saturday, bringing his tally to nine goals in four Premier League matches this season.

This achievement sets a new record in the English top flight, surpassing the eight goals scored by Wayne Rooney for Manchester United during the 2011/12 season.

However, Haaland is on the brink of another astonishing accomplishment, one currently held by five-time Ballon d'Or winner, Ronaldo.

The Norwegian has scored 99 goals in 103 appearances for Manchester City, and if he finds the net against Inter, he will become the fastest player to reach 100 goals for a European club.

Ronaldo achieved his century for Real Madrid in his 105th match in 2011, against Lyon, meaning Haaland could surpass this record by just one game.

City manager Pep Guardiola, speaking during a press conference covered by the Manchester Evening News, jokingly remarked that he would be satisfied if Haaland maintained his scoring form, even without further improvement.

"He can evolve, but if you tell me he scores another 99 goals in the next 100 games, I’m perfectly fine with that," Guardiola said.

"As many games as he plays for this club, he will improve naturally. I played professionally for 11 years and scored 11 goals. This guy has nine in four. He could equal my total in a single game."

"I don’t expect him to score two or three in every game; it’s not a problem if it doesn’t happen. The difference this season is that he feels good. Opponents will find ways to limit his goal tally, and we’ll have to adapt to keep winning."

"If more players are focused on marking him, we’ll create opportunities for others to score. But hopefully, he’ll maintain his positive mindset."

Should Haaland score once against Inter on Wednesday, he will equal Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero's tally of 42 Champions League goals.

Two goals would see him level with former Barcelona star Neymar on 43, while a hat-trick would bring him on par with Chelsea and Liverpool icons Didier Drogba and Mohamed Salah, both of whom have 44 goals.

City’s home match against Inter marks their first in the newly introduced Champions League format this season.

Slovan Bratislava, Sparta Prague, Sporting Lisbon, Feyenoord, and Juventus are their next five opponents before Christmas.

After the new year, they will face Paris Saint-Germain and Club Brugge, with a top-eight finish in the new league phase securing them direct qualification to the last 16.
