Ex-Leeds boss named manager at Championship club plus Sunderland set to face Portsmouth next season

Championship club Rotherham has announced Steve Evans as their new manager, following the departure of Leam Richardson. Evans returns to Rotherham, where he previously enjoyed success between 2012 and 2015, securing back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship before moving to Leeds United.

The 61-year-old, who most recently managed League One side Stevenage, has signed a contract with Rotherham until 2027. He takes over as the Millers' third manager of the season, replacing Richardson, who struggled to turn around the club's fortunes since his appointment in December.

Despite Richardson's efforts, Rotherham's relegation from the Championship was confirmed after a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Plymouth earlier this month. Now, Evans is tasked with overseeing the team's final three league matches against Birmingham, Bristol City, and Cardiff.

Reflecting on their previous encounters, Sunderland had secured a 2-1 victory over Rotherham earlier in the season, before Richardson's tenure, with Jobe Bellingham scoring twice. The teams then played out a 1-1 draw in December under the management of Michael Beale.

While Rotherham faces relegation, Portsmouth is poised to replace them in the Championship after sealing promotion and the League One title with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Barnsley at Fratton Park. Meanwhile, Paul Warne's Derby County could also join Portsmouth in the second tier if they secure a win against Cambridge this weekend, coupled with a failure by Bolton to beat Port Vale.
