Rebels and Wallabies fly-half Carter Gordon is considering a switch to rugby league and has been in talks with the NRL club, the Gold Coast Titans, according to reports from Australian media.

The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) reported on Tuesday that Carter Gordon has been in talks with the Titans, who currently occupy 16th position in the NRL Premiership's 17-team competition, amidst uncertainty over the future of the Rebels.

The Rebels, based in Melbourne, face uncertainty regarding their continuation in Super Rugby Pacific beyond the 2024 tournament after entering voluntary administration earlier this year.

Gordon, in the final year of his contract with the Rebels and Rugby Australia, made his Test debut last year in the Rugby Championship Test against the Springboks in Pretoria and was part of Wallabies head coach Eddie Jones' 2023 Rugby World Cup squad in France.

With the possibility of the Rebels exiting Super Rugby Pacific after this season, Gordon's management reportedly met with Titans officials to secure a contract for 2025 and beyond.

However, the SMH report indicated that the Titans hesitated at the asking price of AUS$700,000 due to Gordon's limited rugby league experience.

Gordon's management initiated the meeting, and although Titans head coach Des Hasler was aware of it, he did not attend the meeting between the two parties.

The Titans are actively seeking playmakers, as Tanah Boyd, their preferred half-back, has struggled to secure his position in the team, and experienced player Kian Foran is nearing the end of his career.

Gordon's agent, Anthony Picone, confirmed his client's genuine interest in transitioning to NRL and mentioned that their management group had been in contact with several NRL clubs, though he specifically named the Titans.

Gordon's consideration of a switch to rugby league follows the announcement last year that Waratahs and Wallabies player Mark Nawaqanitawase will join the Sydney Roosters on a two-year deal starting in 2025, while Reds and Wallabies utility back Jordan Petaia recently held discussions with St. George Illawarra Dragons coach Shane Flanagan.
