Victor Wanyama Retires from Football at 34, Ending Pioneering Career
Former Kenya national team captain Victor Wanyama has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34, bringing to a close a career that spanned nearly two decades. Wanyama, the first Kenyan to play in the English Premier League, reflected on his journey from a young boy in Muthurwa to representing his nation on the international stage, saying, “Four different countries, six different clubs, a boy from Muthurwa with a big dream, carrying a nation's pride every time I stepped onto the pitch.”
Wanyama began his notable European career when he signed for Southampton from Scottish club Celtic in July 2013 for a reported fee of £12.5 million. During his time at Southampton, he made 85 appearances and scored four goals before moving to Tottenham Hotspur in June 2016 for £11 million, where he continued to make a significant impact in midfield.
On the international stage, Wanyama earned 64 caps for Kenya and captained the Harambee Stars before stepping down in September 2021 after being overlooked for the nation’s unsuccessful attempt to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Although he was called out of retirement in 2025 by Kenya’s coach Benni McCarthy for the African Nations Championships hosted in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, Wanyama declined the offer.
In club football, Wanyama had a varied career, playing in four different countries. After a stint in Major League Soccer with Montreal Impact, he returned to Scotland in March 2025, joining Championship side Dunfermline Athletic on a short-term deal. His retirement marks the end of a remarkable journey, not only as a pioneering Kenyan in European football but also as a dedicated leader for his national team, inspiring young players across Africa.
