Lamine Yamal has strongly condemned what he described as “ignorant and racist” behaviour after anti-Muslim chants were heard during Spain’s international fixture against Egypt.
Lamine Yamal Condemns ‘Ignorant and Racist’ Anti-Muslim Chants During Spain vs Egypt Match
The FC Barcelona winger appeared visibly distressed during the match, which took place at the RCDE Stadium on Tuesday evening.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Yamal said: “I am a Muslim. Yesterday in the stadium, the chant ‘The one who doesn’t jump is Muslim’ was heard.
“I understand it was directed at the opposition and not personally at me, but as a Muslim, it remains disrespectful and completely unacceptable.”
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) condemned the incident, while Catalonia’s regional police confirmed that an investigation is underway.
Yamal added: “I know that not all supporters behave in this way, but to those who chant such things: using religion as a joke in a stadium only portrays ignorance and racism.
“Football is meant to be enjoyed and celebrated—not used as a platform to disrespect people for who they are or what they believe.”
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente also denounced the behaviour following his side’s goalless draw.
“I feel complete and absolute rejection of any xenophobic or racist attitudes. They are entirely unacceptable,” he said.
FIFA is expected to review official reports from match officials before determining whether any disciplinary action will be taken.
Spain are scheduled to face Saudi Arabia at the upcoming World Cup and will also take on Cape Verde and Uruguay in Group H of the expanded 48-team tournament.
Egypt, meanwhile, will compete in Group G, where they are set to face Belgium, New Zealand and Iran.
The fixture was hosted in Spain after being relocated from Qatar due to regional instability linked to the conflict involving Iran.
