At least 18 people died after an inflatable boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Bodrum, Turkey. Twenty-one migrants were rescued, and search efforts continue. The vessel had ignored authorities’ warnings while attempting to cross the Aegean Sea toward Greece.

At least 18 people have died after an inflatable boat carrying migrants capsized in Turkish waters early Wednesday morning, highlighting once again the dangers associated with irregular sea crossings in the region.
According to Turkish authorities, the vessel—an inflatable boat fitted with an outboard motor—was attempting to ferry migrants across the Aegean Sea toward Europe when it was intercepted. Officials said the boat ignored repeated warnings to stop, and the pilot reportedly attempted to flee rather than comply with instructions. During the pursuit, the vessel encountered rough sea conditions, began to take on water, and ultimately capsized.
The incident occurred off the coast of Bodrum, a major tourist destination in southwestern Turkey, known for its beaches and proximity to several Greek islands. Authorities said the boat was first detected at around 0300 GMT, prompting an immediate emergency response.
Search and rescue operations were swiftly launched, with three patrol boats and a helicopter dispatched from the western city of Izmir to the scene. Rescue teams worked through challenging conditions to locate survivors and recover victims from the water.
In a statement, the Turkish Coast Guard confirmed that 21 undocumented migrants were rescued alive, while the bodies of 18 others were recovered. Officials noted that efforts are still ongoing to determine whether additional migrants remain missing, indicating that the death toll could potentially rise as search operations continue.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact point of departure or the intended destination of the boat. However, such journeys typically aim for nearby Greek islands, which serve as entry points into the European Union for many migrants.
The Greek island of Kos is located approximately 20 kilometers (13 miles) from Bodrum, making it one of the closest and most commonly targeted destinations for migrants attempting the crossing
